British briefing to boost integration

Date published: 18 June 2007

Immigrants should be given cultural briefing packs to ease them into British life.

That’s according to a new report which sets out “British likes” such as queuing at the post office and bus stops. But it also highlights what behaviour is not tolerated — for example swearing or spitting in the street.

The Commission on Integration and Cohesion admits that mass immigration has been unsettling for many communities in the country, but offers a host of recommendations to boost integration.

A commission spokesman said: “Things like that sound very simple but can drive members of the settled community barmy — when it might be that new arrivals just don’t know about things like that.”

So-called “Britishness tests” are compulsory for foreigners who want to take UK nationality but there is no requirement for other immigrants to learn about British life.

The report says the commission wants to see a reduction in the amount of materials translated into other languages and money saved ploughed into helping immigrants learn English.
