Smoking ban blamed for low beer sales
Date published: 23 January 2009
Middleton based brewer JW Lees has sited the smoking ban as one of the reasons for a decline in sales.
Company turnover declined from £50.8million in 2007 to £49.6million in March 2008. The brewer sited the smoking ban, 'subdued consumer spending' and the comparative cheap cost of supermarket beer as some of the reasons for the reduced sales.
The company was still able to maintain a profit of £4.6million, down slightly from £4.8million in March 2007.
JW Lees are anticipating continued profit this year.
