Recession? Chamber of Commerce has a plan...

Date published: 23 January 2009

Businesses that fear they will be swallowed by the recession are being urged to partake in an ‘action plan’ put forward by the Chamber of Commerce.

Following today’s news (Friday 23 January) that that country has officially hit a recession period, Chris Fletcher, Deputy Chief Executive of Greater Manchester Chamber, announced that he is lobbying the Government for as much help as possible, and is offering practical help and advice to Rochdale businesses.

He said: “The recession is another piece of bad news for our economy, but it will at least end all the speculation, which has not been helpful in any way.

“Now everyone can hopefully get on with working out how best to help businesses through these tough times. Here at the Chamber, we have already launched our Action For Business plan which lists the practical help and advice which we can offer businesses.

“It also sets out how we are lobbying the Government to ensure local companies get the help they need.”

Paul Rowen MP added: "The recession is  no surprise and it’s clear that it is hitting us hard.

"The Government’s response has so far been inadequate, woeful and ham-fisted. They seem to be hell-bent on helping the banks and not small businesses.

"If the credit crunch could be solved by the number of rash, Governmental announcements our economic problems would be over. All we seem to hear from the Government is the daily rhetoric of un-costed announcements. Take for example, the small loans guarantee scheme. Instead of talking, they should announce the implementation of it".
