More than 300 find ways into construction thanks to J21
Date published: 24 October 2008
More than 300 people have found employment in the construction sector thanks to J21 in Oldham and Rochdale and hundreds more have received training in the skills the construction sector needs.
J21, funded by the Oldham Rochdale Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder as part of Oldham and Rochdale Councils, is enabling local labour to take advantage of the growing number of construction projects across the two boroughs. They also work in close partnership with both Oldham and Hopwood Hall Colleges.
Contractors are helped to win subcontracting opportunities on the projects, and all contractors working on the construction projects are encouraged to employ local people, whether skilled workers or new entrants to the industry.
J21 matches workers to job opportunities, and working with the local Councils in the two boroughs, enters into agreements with developers to maximise the number of entry-level opportunities.
Celebrating the 300 milestone, Project Manager Bob Barber said: “We have been really pleased to help so many people, men and women, school-leavers starting out to experienced workers looking to update their skills.
“We aim to get as many local people as possible working on the major capital projects coming on line in both boroughs, whether that’s new schools and health facilities, new or refurbished homes, or developing business parks.”
HMR Pathfinder Director Alastair Graham said: “J21’s work means that local people and local companies are well placed to take advantage of current opportunities and will be better placed to withstand the economic downturn.”
Amongst the 300, Geoff Waller, age 62, was helped by J21 to secure the post of Contracts Manager with PGC Demolition. Geoff Waller said: “This service is invaluable, especially for those with limited skills and experience. I hope it continues to benefit local businesses and people for many years to come”.
James Deacy, age 16, found a position as a Chainlad assisting engineers with Carillion Civils At Kingsway in Rochdale.
Tony Butterworth from Rochdale enjoys the shortest journey to work of the 300. Employed as a caretaker and Plant operator at Kingsway with Wilson Bowden, he lives just across the road from the site.
Tony commented: “I consider myself very lucky, doing what I enjoy the most: working outside. What's best about the job is that I'm working on my doorstep, on the biggest construction site for miles, for a national developer that takes pride in what it does.”
And building surveying student, Imran Ahmed is one of many examples of people’s outstanding commitment. Having gained summer work experience with Carillion at Kingsway, Imran continued his role, working unpaid alongside his studies to increase his experience.
Bob Barber added: “Due to the nature of the industry some jobs in construction only last the length of the contract. We’re able to help some people again and again. On the other hand we’ve helped people onto full term apprenticeships through major contractors, and into professional roles with national companies.”
The total is increasing all the time. If J21 can help you find a place in construction, contact J21 on 01706 646471 or visit www.j21.org.uk
