New job portal highlights seasonal employment

Date published: 24 July 2021

Seasonal jobs for people of all ages are being highlighted by the Department for Work and Pensions – with vacancies on offer in the fishing, hospitality and travel sectors.

The dedicated portal is available on the jobs website Find a Job, making it easier for jobseekers to find roles available in their area and employers are also being urged to get on board.

Whether on a break from college or waiting to start a degree, there are numerous roles available, giving youngsters a chance to build all-important practical skills. It also gives jobseekers of all ages a simple way to shop the jobs that are available with the website providing breakdowns by location and job type.

The summer portal also provides another opportunity for young people to get a foot in the door, gain experience for a CV and stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs in the future.

Minister for Employment Mims Davies MP said: “As the Great British summer ramps up, we’re delighted to have launched a new jobs portal. Whether it’s a seasonal or temporary role, the portal offers jobseekers an accessible one-stop-shop.

“We know this has been a challenging time but we are serious about supporting Britain’s workforce as we build back better – brighter days are ahead.”

Jobseekers can also use the Job Help website for advice on next steps from training opportunities to pivoting roles or sectors.

For younger jobseekers, leading sports retailer JD Sports has around 100 Kickstart roles available at its Kingsway distribution centre to help young people into work, whilst Rochdale Borough Council also has Kickstart vacancies.

The government’s Kickstart scheme offers financial support to businesses and organisations which employ young people, aged 16-24, who are at risk of long-term unemployment. The scheme offers a six-month full time paid work placement for young people on universal credit, with the aim of getting them vital work experience to help kickstart their careers.

Other employers joining JD Sports in providing Kickstart placements include Rochdale Council, Superdrug and Pets at Home, whilst The Northern Care Alliance has secured six placements at Rochdale Infirmary.

Recruitment at Rochdale Infirmary is currently being finalised and candidates will be in post early August.

All those who successfully complete their six-month Kickstart placement will be offered the chance to apply for any one of the roles across the NCA’s sites, given support in doing so and will also be offered the chance of permanent employment post their successful application.

The Department for Work and Pensions has arranged virtual open days with the NHS and will also see them on site at the Rochdale Jobcentre to give Kickstart hopefuls a chance to hear about the job opportunities available. There will be another cohort in the summer.

Successful candidates will receive support from the Prince’s Trust, two weeks immediately before employment to ensure they are fully equipped for their roles.

Hope Citadel Healthcare has provided Kickstart opportunities covering Middleton, Heywood and Rochdale and has also begun to conduct interviews for receptionists. Additional interviews will shortly follow for their role of office assistant.

C &T Restaurants for McDonalds will be interviewing in the Jobcentre Plus for their role of Crew Member across the wider Greater Manchester area. McDonalds enrol newly recruited members to their McDonalds Crew Development Programme. The programme consists of a range of materials to deliver training and assess functional and behavioural competence.

The Department for Work and Pensions continues to run a weekly virtual Kickstart Jobs Fair with vacancies from employers.

Please contact your Work Coach to apply for a Kickstart scheme.
