Reminder to check oil storage facilities for leaks
Date published: 09 November 2007
The Environment Agency is reminding local businesses to check oil storage facilities for leaks, as every year they deal with around 5000 incidents involving oil pollution, many of which are caused by faulty oil storage.
Businesses with faulty oil storage that causes environmental pollution, can face unlimited fines; charges for clean up, increased insurance, and even third party litigation.
Any company that stores more than 200 litres of oil must comply with the Oil Storage Regulations 2001. Minimum standards of this are; there must be a impermeable secondary containment (a bund) without any outlet, sight gauges and pipe work must be properly supported, and all tanks must be protected against accidental damage (including vandalism).
Some companies may be exempt from these regulations, but should check with the Environment Agency to see what action they should take.
