80 further Poundworld stores to close

Date published: 13 July 2018

Poundworld have announced a further 80 stores are to close, but Rochdale has still not been named as one.

The total of stores to close since the discount retailer went into administration now totals over 100, resulting in the redundancies of more than 1,250 members of staff.

There are three Poundworld stores in the borough on Yorkshire Street & Kingsway and in  Middleton Shopping Centre, employing a total of 36 members of staff.

The budget retailer appointed Clare Boardman and Daniel Butters, restructuring partners at Deloitte, as joint administrators after a rescue deal fell through.

The closure of these 80 stores will be phased from Friday 20 July to Sunday 22 July, reducing the number of open stores to 230.

Ms Boardman said: “Whilst we remain hopeful that a sale for part, or parts, of the business can still happen, it has not been possible to sell the business as a whole. We would like to thank all the employees for their continued support and commitment during this difficult time. We are keeping staff appraised of developments as they happen.”

Rochdale Online asked why our local stores have signs present in the windows suggesting their closure.

A spokesperson for Poundworld clarified: “Rather confusingly, all shops have this sign in the window, to get through stock. Conversations are going on with regards to a sale of part, or parts, of the business.”
