Local optometrist Paul Cheetham surprised by celebrations to mark 26 years of serving Rochdale Community

Date published: 17 August 2017

When Paul Cheetham arrived at work on Thursday, he was met with a touching surprise. Colleagues at the newly refurbished Paul Cheetham Eyecare Rochdale planned a special event for Mr Cheetham at the practice where he has been performing eye examinations for almost 26 years.

The father of four was met with family members, loyal clients and Rochdale Mayor and Mayoress, Ian Duckworth and Mrs Christine Duckworth.

Over the years, Mr Cheetham has also had a close relationship with the eye departments in the local hospitals and health centres, acquiring the practice over 26 years ago and creating lasting relationships with generations of patients.

In 1993 he joined Heywood, Middleton, Rochdale and Bury Local Optical Committee as treasurer and completed six years as chairman.

In 2001, he bought a majority share the Rochdale branch of Co-op Eyecare and founded Paul Cheetham Eyecare.

He is also a director of Greater Manchester Primary Eyecare Ltd and sits on various other committees and working groups.

Resident optometrist, Faheem Sarfraz, who has been at the practice for two years, said: "Paul has a fabulous rapport with people and we wanted to celebrate his fantastic optical career and mark the occasion.

"I am grateful to the Mayor and Mayoress for taking time out of their busy diary to join us and help make it a very special event.

"We wish Paul a relaxing retirement, and myself and the team look forward to maintaining the great service and high clinical standards going forwards".

Karen Peel, practice manager for over 20 years, said: “Throughout the years I have had the pleasure of working alongside Paul, he continued to improve access to outstanding eyecare.

“He has had a phenomenal career and a lasting impact on the Rochdale community.

"I would like to wish him the best of luck for the future.”
