On Wednesday 8 March 2006, to coincide with National No Smoking Day, Rochdale MBC in Partnership with the local Primary Care Trust is to launch a campaign to promote smoke free environments in workplaces and homes across the borough. The campaign intends to focus on the benefits of becoming completely smoke free.
Following success in Manchester, a number of 12ft tall giant daisies are to be placed in key locations across the Rochdale Borough to represent smoke free Rochdale. The giant daisies will give maximum impact to create a lot of awareness and grab people’s attention.
Gary Parkinson, RMBC Senior Environmental Health Officer, is seeking sponsorship from companies or organisations that are already smoke free or striving to become smoke free. He says: "You could sponsor a daisy, which can be designed to include your logo on the stem. The daisy can then be displayed in the vicinity of your premises or at any other permitted location within the Rochdale Borough."
At the end of the campaign the daisy will be the sponsors to keep. It is the intention to donate the daisies sponsored by Rochdale MBC and Rochdale PCT to local schools to ensure that the message reaches young people and encourages schools to become completely smoke free and to promote the messages further.
Teaming up with companies and other organisations will strengthen the message and promote smoke free status or commitment to becoming smoke free. "The campaign will undoubtedly generate interest and having a daisy containing your logo at your premises will let people know that you support the ‘Smoke Free Rochdale’ campaign", said Gary.
If you are interested in sponsoring a daisy, please contact Gary at the earliest opportunity so that arrangements can be made to have a daisy in place in time for the launch.
He would also like to hear from you if you are doing anything else locally on 'National No Smoking Day' so that he can promote it.
