Littleborough embroidery business ready to expand

Date published: 30 November 2005

Glenys Kerruish from Littleborough has been running her business, Embroidery by Design, from home for the last 3 years.

Glenys first started embroidering back in the mid 80’s, when she worked as a Registered Nurse and a colleague asked if she could make her a cot quilt. It just escalated from there and sadly, when her father passed away, it encouraged her to think about taking her embroidery business further. Glenys purchased a more advanced embroidery machine with the money her father left her and now, 30 years on from creating her first cot quilt for a customer, she is very happy working from home creating Bridesmaids Dresses, Mother of the Bride Outfits, Communion Dresses, Wedding Veils, Ring Cushions and much more, as her own boss.

Embroidery by Design gets most of its customers through word of mouth as Glenys has an excellent reputation that precedes her.  She also embroiders for Brides of Rochdale.

Glenys said that when she first started 3 years ago she thought it was wonderful, being able to choose when to work with nobody looking over her shoulder, doing something she enjoyed.  Obviously the main advantage to working from home is that it keeps the overheads down, so Glenys can afford to create beautiful products at very competitive prices.

Glenys mentioned that there are also downsides to working from home: "it can be a little lonely at times, there are always distractions and you do need to be disciplined."

Glenys is thankful for the support she has been given from her husband and from Barbara Davidson from the Women’s Enterprise Initiative, without whom she wouldn’t have been able to cope with the stresses of running her own business.  Her advice before working from home would be give it some hard and fast thought, although she did admit that the rewards far outweigh the drawbacks.

Glenys is now ready for business premises, as her workroom is no longer suitable for the amount of work she has to do.
