Rochdale based Internet Service Provider (ISP) Zen Internet has become an accredited .EU registrar, and can now take pre-registration orders for the all new .eu top level domain, which is being managed by the Belgian company, EURid. This new domain is being touted as the most important one since ‘.com,’ and it is expected that there will be upwards of a million applications.
The launch has been spilt into three parts, to allow organisations to apply for domain names that they have ‘prior rights’ for. The ‘.eu’ domain will give businesses their very first truly pan-European identity, and, due to the high number of applications that are expected, many customers will want to purchase a .eu domain to protect their brand identity.
The first period begins on the 7 December, and during this time accredited registrars can place orders for trademark holders and public bodies. Due to the order process that EURid have put in place, registrars can only place one order at once, so they must start at the top of their pre-registration list and work down. Therefore the sooner that customers place their pre-registration order for all three periods, the sooner that order will be placed with EURid and the greater the chance that the application will be successful.
As part of any order placed in the first two periods of the launch, businesses must prove that they have the ‘prior rights’ to their name. For this reason, Zen Internet will proof all prior rights before forwarding them to the relevant validation agent. This could be the difference between an application succeeding and failing, as the validation agent will only ever accept the first set of documents that they receive.
