Mrs Mary Rodak
Rochdale Law Association was formed 100 years ago on 19 December 1905 in the Lyceum Public Hall on Baillie Street Rochdale and several Rochdale Lawyers are direct descendants of those who were present.
This was part of the Presidential Response by Mrs Mary Rodak to the Toast to Rochdale Law Association proposed by District Judge Stephen Greenwood at the Annual Dinner which was held in the Alta Vista Functions Suite at the Bella vista Restaurant Milnrow on Friday 11 November.
The event was a sell out. Solicitors and their guests enjoying an excellent meal including Fillet Rossini. An ambitious menu for a gathering of over 120 which was cooked to perfection.
Those present were reminded of the plight of the people of Kashmir in a short address by Mohammed Mushtaq of KYP, and responded by raising £1,247.50 in a prize draw. This sum will be added to the substantial monies already raised in Rochdale to fly much needed help to those suffering following this natural disaster. A demonstration that Lawyers really do have a heart of gold.
Those attending the event, who included The Mayor, Councillor Ashley Dearnley, Paul Rowen MP. Jim Dobbin MP, Councillor Ann Metcalfe, and three District Judges, then heard an excellent and amusing speech from Mr Anthony Brannick who proposed the toast to “Our Guests” which was responded to by Mr Gerard McDermott QC in a similar light hearted fashion with an emphasis on the problems of Ferrets and with thanks to the Rochdale Law Association for such an excellent event to mark 100 years of service to the Citizens of Rochdale.
