New breast screening equipment at the Highfield Hospital

Date published: 24 February 2016

BMI Healthcare has installed new digital breast screening equipment at Highfield Hospital.

The hi-tech machine enables doctors at Highfield to instantly view detailed, high-quality images and helps to improve cancer detection.

Paul McGaughey, executive director at Highfield, said the Mammomat Inspiration, supplied by Siemens Healthcare, will lead to a more confident, accurate and faster diagnosis, resulting in a better service for patients.

He added: “The equipment offers clinicians and patients at The Highfield Hospital a number of key benefits, such as vastly-improved image quality to detect the smallest detail, which provides our consultants with the best practice for the management of breast conditions.

“The transition from analogue to digital mammography eliminates the need for film, which reduces the time taken for each examination.

“It will help to improve the care and expertise we are able to offer our patients. There will be improved cancer detection, fewer false positives and less anxiety for patients.”

The equipment’s hi-tech features mean x-ray images can be obtained with lower levels of exposure to radiation. Doses are calculated according to the patient’s individual breast size and tissue type.

It is housed in the x-ray department at Highfield, and the suite features mood lighting designed to put patients at their ease.
