Rochdale companies challenged to make Enviro-resolutions
Date published: 19 December 2007
Rochdale businesses are being challenged to come up with a list of New Year's resolutions that will help the environment.
Companies can save money by taking measures to save on waste paper, water and energy by making small changes and then measuring the financial benefits at the end of February.
Statistics show that while over 50% of small businesses make New Year’s resolutions, these are often broken within one month as they prove too expensive or take up too many resources.
“Businesses often fall down on their resolutions through lack of time, money or by being too ambitious,” said Nick Ward, Regional Manager for the North West of sustainable business expert Envirowise. “We can help all companies plan, and keep, their resolutions on the environment. All we ask is that companies focus their efforts on one area, measure their current use in January, implement a straightforward change and then re-measure use at end of February. This should allow people to spot the difference and identify savings in a very short space of time.”
The advice is echoed by top psychologist Professor Stephen Wood, deputy director of the Institute of Work Psychology, who says that making a single resolution and planning in advance are keys to success in keeping New Year’s resolutions. He said: “Whether you’re a business or an individual, the top tips are the same. Pick just one area to focus on to improve your chances of success, and plan your resolution in advance, instead of waiting until New Year’s Eve. The extra time will allow you to reflect on what you really want to achieve, and then plan for it.”
