Local Election 2011
Nicholas A Thornsby
As a Liberal Democrat, I am proud of what my party has achieved in Norden, in Rochdale and also in government.
In Norden, my hard-working colleague Wera Hobhouse is a fantastic ward councillor who has achieved an enormous amount to improve Norden over the past few years.
When the Liberal Democrats were running the Council, they did a lot of good things, particularly on the devolution agenda, giving power and money back to communities so that people, not bureaucrats, decide what local groups and projects to support.
In government, things are undoubtedly tough because of the financial legacy left by the Labour party. But the Liberal Democrats are demonstrating that they can still make Britain a fairer and more liberal country: cutting taxes for low and middle income earners, investing in early years education, providing a fair deal for pensioners and cutting back Labour’s surveillance state.
I have lived in Norden for almost all of my life, and it would be a privilege to be chosen to represent the ward this election.
