Hamer boxer Husnain Ali defeats Tom Summerbell

Date published: 05 March 2015

Amateur boxer Husnain Ali left County Durham happy after defeating boxer Tom Summerbell and walking away with a unanimous decision in his favour on Thursday 19 February.

Having travelled over 130 miles to the Wingate Constitutional Club to represent Hamer Amateur Boxing Club, Ali had a tough fight ahead of him as Summerbell has a record of
16 wins and 11 losses.

Summerbell was the more experienced of the two boxers but on the sound of the first bell it was the Hamer boxer who instantly silenced the home crowd as he took the fight
to his opponent with punishing hooks to both the body and head.

Summerbell tried to keep Ali at range with his sharp jabs while resting all of his weight upon his back foot, hoping to land his big right hand but Ali used clever head movements to evade most of the punches as he forced the local boxer upon the ropes, where he continued to punish Summerbell to take the round.

In round two both boxers looked to take the middle of the ring but it was Summerbell who had the crowd on its feet when he landed a thunderous right hand to the jaw of Ali.

The referee was about to step in and administer the Rochdale boxer a standing eight count but astonishingly instead of falling to the floor, Ali responded with a huge punch of his own, which sent Summerbell off balance and back upon the ropes.

The punch Ali received seemed to have woken him up as he began to unload big hit upon big hit on his opponent. Summerbell could do nothing in reply but to stay on the ropes and take the punishment.

The prolonged onslaught forced the referee to step in and give Summerbell a standing eight count before allowing both boxers to continue.

Summerbell was clearly exhausted from the punishment he had sustained from Ali and he stayed upon the ropes, allowing Ali to pile on more pressure and take the second
round.

The crowd was totally silenced going into the third and last round as Ali continued to force his opponent back onto the ropes and as he stayed in range he unloaded hooks to the body and head. All Summerbell could do was to hold onto his opponent while the referee repeatedly broke both boxers apart.

It was a tactic that worked and Summerbell managed to last out the round but it was Ali who came away with a unanimous decision in his favour.
