Dale chase Halifax striker

Date published: 23 June 2008

Rochdale are one of a number football league clubs bidding to sign striker Jon Shaw, who has been transfer listed by non-league club Halifax Town.

Dale have been mentioned alongside Stockport County and three other league clubs in the chase for the 24-year-old's signature.

Shaw scored 20 goals for Halifax last season and he recently opened his account at international level when he opened the scoring in England C's 2-0 win over the West Indies.

Dale's local rivals Bury are also in the hunt, as well as Bradford City and Rotherham United, while non-league interest has been generated by Rushden and Diamonds, Stevenage Borough and Burton Albion.

Halifax are currently in financial trouble and there has been strong speculation that the club could be wound up before the season starts. That would mean that, while Dale would have to pay a fee for Shaw as things stand, he could leave for nothing if the club goes under.

If they survive, Halifax will play in the Unibond League next season after they were expelled from the Conference for breaking the league's rules on club finances.
