Climbing his way to the top

A young Rochdale climber has achieved success at an international event in Italy.

11-year-old Randy Roby recently won the B category in the Under 14 Cup at the Arco Rock Junior to become only the event's second ever British winner.

Randy trains at Climb Rochdale on School Lane and his victory marks a major achievement for one of North West's best young climbers.

Ian Dunn, Managing Director at Climb Rochdale, said: "Randy is really pleased with his win as he managed to beat a lot of the competitors that he had competed against in the Rock Color Competition at Imst last month."

The Arco event has been run for the past seven years. This year there were 20 countries represented with over 600 young climbers participating in the weekend's activities.

He reached the top of the route on Saturday alongside 12 other competitors but it was on Sunday that he really showed his class.

He came close to the top of the final route and finished five holds ahead of the two climbers who came second.

He is now looking forward to the BMC Youth Climbing series National Final in Ratho on 28 June.
