Manchester Girls FC climbing the league

Date published: 13 December 2014

Steve Epstein set up the Manchester Girls football team set up in Middleton after he saw the potential in girl’s football.

He said: “I used to run a boys and a girls team but I decided to break away from the boy’s team. After that I decided to start this girls’ team. Girl’s football is just getting better and better and some of the girls are better than the boys these days.”

The U13s team is third in their league with the U18s team lying second behind Manchester City.

He added: “The improvement of the girls has been brilliant. In our first season we had a few tough fights and we were third from the bottom of the league and now we are doing really well and are currently third from the top of the league.

“The girls in the Under 18s team have been training with me since they were 11 so now they are the Under 18s team. We then started the U13s and we have started to get a response from some of the younger girls so once we get a few more, hopefully we can get an Under 8s or an Under 9s team going,” said Steve.

The U13s team is currently sponsored by JP Kelsey Plumbing and Heating and the U18s is sponsored by Clarion UK Securities.

Steve said: “I am really proud of the girls for what they are achieving. One of the girls I spotted when she was nine is now playing for the U16s at Blackburn Rovers and has been spotted by England so we do have success stories.”
