Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club Agecroft Small Boats Head

Date published: 21 October 2014

On a blustery autumn Saturday (18 October) a small team from Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club (HLRC) went into the heart of Salford Quays.

The course of approx. 3,050m on the River Irwell with 185 boats spread over three Divisions took rowers past views of Old Trafford, the Imperial War Museum North, and brought them to a finish line facing Salford’s Media City.

Division One was devoted to 75 single scullers who completed the course in very windy conditions with the first 2000m struggling against a strong head wind and the final 1000m being helped along by a following wind after a very welcome sweeping bend.

Tim Booth of HLRC who came second in the whole Division said: “It was tough, you just had to dig deep and get through that head wind, but when you came round the bend it was a welcome break and helped drive on to the finish.”

Tim also competed in Division Three with his doubles partner, Club President, Keith
Lawton. Tim and Keith came third in the Division beating a mixture of eights, fours, quads, doubles and pairs, a total of 56 crews competing in this Division.

Beaten by a four from Agecroft and a J17 double from Northwich, Tim and Keith were pleased with their performance and an excellent time of 11 minutes 36 seconds.

Division One also saw an excellent win in her category for Leanna Daniels who beat her nearest rival by 1 minute 22 seconds.

Tom Swithenbank from HLRC racing as a J15 had 7 competitors in his category. Tom came a very respectable second in tough windy conditions, almost 2 minutes ahead of the last J15.

The Second Division saw two WJ14 doubles from HLRC competing.

Both crews gave fantastic performances with Molly Archbold and Hannah Lowe winning the medals, whilst Sally Tisdall and Darcie Willis were second.

Both crews beat WJ15, WJ16 and WJ17 doubles, as well as quads and fours in a strong performance that did themselves and the Club proud.

Although it was only a relatively small team, the athletes put in a fantastic performance, showing what strength and talent there is at HLRC.
