Medals for Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club at Warrington Regatta

Date published: 06 August 2014

The early evening sun sparkling on the gently flowing River Mersey belied the true conditions of the Warrington Regatta on Saturday 2 August. The 750m buoyed course was often subject to torrential downpours, and although contestants and spectators may have been soaked to the skin spirits were never dampened as a full programme of magnificent racing continued uninterrupted throughout the day.

The day’s racing included the North of England Mixed Quad Championships. This saw some strong contestants sprinting for victory, with the mixed IM2 coxless quad from Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club winning three races to take gold.

The crew, consisting of George Kershaw, Reece Handley, Leanna Daniels and Katie Hargreaves had some strong opposition but overcame them with a great display of sculling.

Reece and Leanna also won gold in the mixed IM2 double sculls with another excellent performance.

Katie Hargreaves was beaten in the WJ16 single sculls but fought one of the closest races of the day with just inches separating the two boats.

Adam Clegg also lost two very close single scull races in the IM3 and the J18 single sculls categories.

In the Masters C coxless quads, Mike Smith, Jason Hardman, Bob Moore and Dave Sykes put on a master class of sculling with an easy victory over Warrington Rowing Club.

The four juniors attending had mixed fortunes. Rowing for the first time together in competition, Darcie Willis, rowing up a year, and Sophie Webb, showed great determination in the WJ14 double sculls. They were beaten by a small margin.

Hannah Lowe and Molly Archbold continued their unbeaten run in the WJ13 double sculls to take gold, retaining their title at Warrington after WJ12 doubles success last year.

Molly, with a number of single scull golds in her age category, rowed up to compete in the WJ14 category. She showed her true strength and quality in a race against a very strong opponent from Liverpool Victoria Rowing Club, losing by just over a boat length.

Hannah competed in the WJ13 single sculls and won her semi-final and final with great style to win gold.

Although only a small team attended from HLRC, the quality of racing, and determination of the contestants, made the Club Captain, Ian John, proud of all those competing.
