Rochdale Hornets 6 - 10 Workington Town

Date published: 12 May 2014

Rochdale Hornets three game winning streak came to a disappointing end on Sunday as Workington Town took the spoils at a rain drenched Spotland Stadium.

The writing was on the wall from kick off as Workington pressed the Hornets line for three consecutive sets and, although the Rochdale defence held strong, it was clear that Workington were the team set to make the most of the deteriorating conditions.

When Hornets did get possesion, it was often gifted back to Workington early in the tackle count and when a wind assisted goal line drop out from Workington found its way a full 80 metres down field Hornets were again under pressure.

The introduction of live wire Lewis Sheridan produced Hornets best spell, with Sheridan being held up over the line.

Half time and no score for either team.

The second half started in the same vein as the first with Workington pressing the Hornets line.

This time, however, they found the cutting edge and a simple pass and good lines of running allowed two carbon copy tries down the Hornets right hand centre channel, where the omission of Mike Ratu due to injury proved costly.

The remainder of the half proved to be a slog in which neither team could get a foot hold, with the Hornets struggling to display the fluent, slick attacking rugby which has seen them collect maximum point in the last three outings.

Hornets did put themselves in with a shout with five minutes remaining when Paul Crook, playing his 100th game for the Hornets, put up a massive bomb which was spilled by Wigan dual registration player Jack Murphy under the challenge from English, allowing Crook to get a hand to the ball for the four pointer which he duly converted to set up a nervy end.

Hornets continued to press but still couldnt find any fluidity and the game ended with the Hornets gaining a single bonus point that Hornets had hoped before kick off would be three.

A much better performance is needed next week in what is a very winnable game against stumbling Halifax.

The game kicks off at 3pm at Spotland with adults priced at £14, Concessions £10 and kids £5.
