Second takes Milnrow to victory over Middleton

Date published: 07 May 2014

Middleton opened the game with overseas amateur Harry Nichols and professional Grant Edmeades. Both looked very steady and comfortable batting against young Aaron Brown and Milnrows overseas amateur, Jakson Knight. Ten overs passed without loss and 49 runs on the board.

A change of bowling at both ends saw Milnrow bringing on two spinners, Declan Wilkinson and Matthew Owen.

Wilkinson's first over started badly with Edmeades hitting out on the first ball to send him along the floor for four. Owen then took the ball with a steady first over to be then hit for 29 in his next two overs.

Both Middleton openers reached their half centuries with ease.

Nichols, looking set for the day, started to hit out with a six off the new bowler Rudi Second at the Rochdale end.

With Milnrow desperate for a wicket, there was another change at the Ladyhouse end with Darren Smith being brought on.

Edmeades reached 84 before being dismissed, caught by the safe hands of 20-year-old Jakson Knight from the delivery of Rudi Second.

Middleton's captain, Jones, then joined Nichols at the crease with the score at 175 after 33 overs. With Nichols still going strong it was only a short time before he reached his 100.

Jones was going at a nice pace when Nichols decided to hit out at Second, resulting in two big shots both being hit for six but when he went for a third big hit, it fell a little short and with Aaron Brown waiting underneath it, Nichols was out for a very respectable 114.

With the score at 219 and 11 overs remaining Middleton hit out to try and reach a tough score for Milnrow to chase, and their innings at 264.

With a high score to chase the pressure was on for the Milnrow squad.

Opening with Robert Wilman and Alexander Bartley, Wilman started quickly by hitting 16-year-old Saj Mahmood for six runs in his first over.

Six overs passed and with the score reaching 20 Bartley was sent on his way when Edmeades caught him on two.

South African professional Rudi Second joined Wilman at the crease for a short time before Wilman was dismissed on 16.

Jakson Knight was then sent in with the score only at 35.

Only nine overs in and plenty of runs needed it was time to look at Second and Knight to bring some hope and both looked comfortable going at a nice pace through a variety of bowlers.

Second reached an unbeaten 50 within 55 balls to be joined 10 minutes later by another unbeaten 50 from Knight within 65 balls.

Middleton desperate for a wicket and the Milnrow duo looking great, the light started to dim, nerves started on both sides.

Second and Knight looking for quick runs and slick boundaries, Knight ran just short of the crease to be dismissed on a quality score of 82.

Milnrow's star, Max Power, joined Second in the 44th over with yet 49 needed.

115 balls passed for Second when he reached 100.

With dreadful light setting in it, Second provided a master class to hit out in great fashion with Power to get Milnrow to the required 265 for just three wickets and their third win of the season.
