Mayfield 40 – 20 Myton

Date published: 29 April 2014

Another good sized crowd saw Mayfield dispose of Myton at the Mayfield Sports Centre on Saturday.

The Hull side arrived early brimming with confidence and with four straight wins to their credit.

They started strongly and took the lead after only four minutes as they slotted over a penalty, given for lying on.

From the restart Myton lost possession and within four drives powerful forward Joe Qanuici crashed through the line to give his side a lead they never relinquished. Butterworth converted.

Mayfield took control playing their trade mark game with the forwards dominating the opposition and the backs taking advantage of the holes that appear as the opposition defence reels.

Rob Kershaw was next to benefit after Todd O’Brien had marched his pack upfield and a superb defence splitting pass from Matt Calland allowed Kershaw to sprint in at the corner. Butterworth again converted from the touchline.

O’Brien was again in outstanding form and was unlucky to be brought down after a 40 metre break which saw his tackler sin binned for a foul after lying on.

Mayfield looked odds on to increase the lead with numerical advantage in their favour but Myton defended well and even managed to cut the defecit after a quick play the ball saw the acting half scoot past two would be defenders and score under the sticks, making the conversion a formality.

A mistake from the re-start gifted Mayfield possession and they were unlucky not to score as O’Brien continued to prompt his side and keep pressure on Myton.

Mayfield’s determination was epitomised as a Paul Brearley kick through was collected by the Myton full back and he in turn was collected by the onrushing Luke Sampson who drove him back over the line to re-gain possession for his side.

From the drop out the ball was taken forward, with Billy Percy scattering defenders in his wake, a quick play from O’Brien saw the ball find Matt Calland who was unstoppable as he went over for a try; again converted by Butterworth.

Mayfield lost their sparkle a bit in the second half but still managed some breath taking tries. The first came as O’Brien and Brearley combined to spread the ball wide to Sam Butterworth who turned back the clock as he sliced through the Myton defence for a vintage Butterworth try, which he also converted.

Callum Marriott was causing problems for Myton as he drove the ball in and he looked good as he twice created tries for winger Kershaw who completed his hat trick in fine style.

O’Brien was orchestrating the play as he made the break and put Aidan Gleeson away, he found his way further upfield then provided a superb pass, as he was tackled, to a rampaging Joe Qanuici who grabbed his second. Butterworth converted.

This completed the scoring for Mayfield as the effort of three games in eight days began to take it’s toll. Mistakes crept in and Myton capitalised, finding their second wind they picked up their game and to their credit they managed three tries to make the score look a little more respectable, finishing 40 – 20.

Mayfield were glad of the final whistle as Myton continued to push forward but they had done more than enough to secure the win and consolidate their second place in the table.

O’Brien was on top form as was John Foy and Brearley in the forwards. Callum Marriott was impressive and Liam Whalley continued his improvement with another solid performance.

The sponsors split the Man-of-the-Match award between Rob Kershaw, who took the ball forward at every opportunity and managed to grab his hat trick, and Sam Butterworth, who stole the show creating openings every time he touched the ball and organised the attack through out.
