Britain’s greatest long distance runner in Littleborough 5k road race

Britain’s greatest ever long distance runner, Dr Ron Hill, visited Littleborough to celebrate his 75th Birthday.

Local race organiser Andy O’Sullivan put together a 5k road race and was rewarded with a field of 357 runners. Ron who has not missed a days running since December 1964 made it round in 27.57 minutes to win his age category.

Ian McBride of Royton won the race in 15.51 minutes whilst Bev Simons prevailed in the ladies with an 18.15 clocking. Lou Gilchrist of Wardle was first lady over 80 with 30.02 and Derek Clutterbuck from Whitworth was first male 80 with 35.26.

Diane Modahl, the 1990 Commonwealth Champion at 800 metres, was a guest at the event and was presented with a cheque for £500 for her Sports Foundation by Charlotte Mort of Rossendale Harriers.

Ron received presents, cards and a bottle of whisky to celebrate his big day.

Andy O’Sullivan said “Ron is easily our best ever distance athlete, he is still an inspiration to us all, let’s hope we’ll all be back for his 80th”.

Proceeds will also be donated to the BBC Radio Manchester Appeal for a mobile chemotherapy unit for the Christie.
