Saddleworth 12 – 58 Mayfield

Date published: 23 September 2013

Mayfield continued their winning run at Saddleworth on Saturday making it 11 straight wins with a comfortable 58 – 12 victory over their hosts.

Mayfield completely dominated the opposition from start to finish, although Saddleworth did put up a spirited fight for the first ten minutes.

The large band of travelling supporters certainly had lots to cheer, and cheer they did as their team ran in try after try with five in each half plus nine conversions from Lewis Sheridan.

From the first try, after only three minutes, as Sam Butterworth put full back Jack Sampson in, to the last, as Rob Kershaw and Matt Calland combined to put Luke Sampson in for his second, Mayfield had total control of the game and the result was never in doubt.

Coach Sam Butterworth was over the moon with the performance saying, "our forwards today were immense there was not one area of the game were even one of our pack was bettered by his opposite number".

Props Matty Moores and Joe Qanuici laid the ground for the backs to get involved and exploit the gaps that had been created, and Paul Brearley had one of his best games for the club.

At one stage, midway through the second half, with Saddleworth in possession Mark Biggins was involved in all five tackles in the set.

The tries we scored were all quality efforts and spread through the side with backs and forwards sharing the tries between them.

Mayfield's tries came from Jack Sampson, Paul Brearley, Matty Moores (2), Rob Kershaw, Luke Sampson (2), Sam Butterworth, Joe Qanuici and Lewis Sheridan.

Luke Sampson was at the top of the list when it came to the tackle count while Rob Kershaw, Jack Sampson and Si Moore all had outstanding games.

Star performers for Mayfield were Sam Butterworth, who rolled back the years, and Lewis Sheridan who was a constant threat for the Saddleworth side and finished the game with a 22 point haul.

Mayfield Team: Jack Sampson, Kristian Duffy, Nick Hargreaves, Matt Calland, Rob Kershaw, Sam Butterworth, Lewis Sheridan, Matty Moores, Todd O’Brien, Joe Qanuici, Luke Sampson, Liam Whalley, Paul Brearley, Mark Biggins, Si Moore, Aidan Gleeson, Komai Nualamatua.
