Futsal intake put through paces

Date published: 19 September 2013

The first day of Rochdale AFC’s Football in the Community Trust Futsal Scholarship saw an intake of twelve students being put through their paces in practical sessions designed to introduce them to the two year BTEC Extended Diploma in Sports Performance and Excellence Course.

They were shown around Spotland Stadium, meeting Captain Peter Cavanagh, Physio Andy Thorpe and Trust Coach, Martin Payne.

The twelve students, who are aged 16 and 17, were given an insight to the programme by the Trust’s Education Officer, Gerard Jones, touching on subjects such as fitness testing and training, sports nutrition, anatomy and physiology.

The students will be studying and training at Rochdale AFC, plus taking part in weekly fixtures in the North West Futsal League at the Leeds Arena.

A club spokesperson said: This is a fantastic opportunity for young people aged 16-17 and there is still time to get involved. Please contact Dale’s Head of Football in the Community, Keith Hicks, by calling 07958593121."

The deadline for enrolment is 1 November.

Futsal is the only form of indoor football approved by FIFA, UEFA and the FA. With over 2 million players regularly participating in the fast-paced 5-a-side action, Futsal is globally recognised as one of the fastest growing indoor sports in the world.
