Mayfield 40 – 20 Milford

Date published: 11 September 2013

Mayfield made it ten out of ten on Saturday at the Mayfield Sports Centre as they disposed of their latest opponents, Milford.

Up until the last twenty minutes this was no easy win for the home side with Milford showing some real touches of class.

The visitors took an early lead with a penalty try and held on to lead at half time, 8 – 14.

Eventually, Mayfield's superiority came through with some quality performances including a 20 point haul from the impressive Lewis Sheridan, two tries and six goals. Other tries came from Matt Calland, Sam Butterworth, Joe Quanici and Paul Brearley 2, including a fine seventy yard effort.

Mayfield showed great spirit when in the unusual position of being behind on the scoreboard, with the forwards again showing their dominance of the opposition. This allowed the backs to capitalise on the space provided and score most of the points with only one try coming from the forwards.

The MOM award went to Joe Quanici but could of gone to any one of a number of players with Sam Butterworth, Paul Brearley, Jack Sampson and Todd O’Brien all having outstanding games.

This win keeps alive Mayfield's slim hopes of promotion at the end of the season, although they are now depending on other teams results not just their own.

Team; Jack Sampson, Dan Kaufman, Nick Hargreaves, Matt Calland, Kristian Duffy, Paul Brearley, Lewis Sheridan, Joe Quanici, Todd O’Brien, Matty Moores, Liam Whalley, Luke Sampson, Callum Marriot, Mark Biggins, Sam Butterworth. Aidan Gleeson, Si Moore.

Under 12s first game

Sunday brought the u12s first game after summer break with them being placed in a tough group for the remainder of the season they rose to the challenge gaining a narrow victory over Saddleworth.

Coach Anthony Bamford was pleased with the way the team performed with good core skills on show throughout. MOM, went to Oliver Bamford, with the coaches awards being claimed by Callum Connolly and Jake Horrocks.
