Mayfield 48 – 12 Oulton

Date published: 02 September 2013

The Mayfield juggernaut rolled on as they coasted past another highly rated side in Oulton Raiders.

Mayfield signalled their intent from the off when Joe Qanuici caught the big Oulton prop with a bone crunching hit in the first tackle of the game.

The Mayfield side took their cue from this, and within three minutes Joe had smashed through the defence to give his side the lead with a Lewis Sheridan converted try.

The tries came at regular intervals through the first half as Mayfield built up a 26 – 0 half time lead.

Scores came from all over the field as Matt Calland, Nick Hargreaves, Rob Kershaw and then Calland again, sealed the game for Mayfield, with Sheridan adding two more conversions.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for the home side as the visitors tried again and again to break the line, but the Mayfield defence was rock solid with Luke Sampson, Nick Hargreaves and Kristian Duffy all making try saving tackles.

The Mayfield spirit was epitomised when after 30 minutes and under pressure, Butterworth put in an early downfield kick. The whole team followed the kick and punished the opposition as they tried to break free from their line. Oulton only made 15 metres before a Hargreaves tackle dislodged the ball and gave his side possession.

Later in the half Oulton had four consecutive sets on the Mayfield line and still the Mayfield defence, led by big Matty Moores managed to hold them out.

The second half saw Oulton stage a mini revival as they managed to grab a score from a high kick that Mayfield failed to deal with, 26 – 6.

From the restart Butterworth tried a short kick off which Joe Qanuici managed to gather; Field worked the ball towards the Oulton line and Nick Hargreaves capitalised when he powered over for his second, 30 -6.

Sheridan and Butterworth were linking superbly and Dan Kaufman made yards whenever he touched the ball.

Callum Marriott was next on the score sheet as he backed up a great break from Butterworth to grab his first try which Sheridan converted, 36 – 6.

Again Oulton fought back and again Mayfield allowed them to break the line as they picked up another converted try, 36 – 12.

That was it for the visitors as Mayfield locked up the line with a fantastic display of team work in defence.

Liam Whalley and Luke Sampson worked hard and again set the platform for their side to go forward.

Todd O’Brien was involved in everything for Mayfield marshalling his troops and allowing Sheridan and Butterworth the space to work their magic as he delivered quick decisive ball time and time again from acting half back.

Mayfield scored two more to finish the game on a high note, through Joe Qanuici and an unbelieveable effort from Marriot, who with four men literally on his back still managed to travel five metres to the line and ground the ball - both converted by Sheridan. 48 – 12.

The first half from Mayfield was as good as anything they have played this season with Butterworth and Sheridan complimenting each others style of play and thriving off the quality ball they were getting from O’Brien.

Kaufman never put a foot wrong at full back and Kristian Duffy on the wing never missed a tackle all afternoon as well as making some good yards when called upon.

The forwards dominated their opposite numbers with Joe Qanuici standing out.

Marriott and Sampson worked tirelessly along with Moores.

The MOM awards were split between Joe Qanuici and Todd O’Brien and nobody at the club could disagree with the choices.

Mayfield have now won nine from nine and look forward to the visit of Milford next weekend.
