Mayfield Alliance 32 - 28 Widnes St Maries Vikings

Date published: 20 August 2013

Following from the recent local Derby success, Mayfield entertained Widnes St Maries on Saturday, with a re-arranged friendly.

Despite a few key player missing and Widnes bolstered by a selection of first team players, Mayfield held a good account of themselves in this thrilling match.

The early pressure came from the home side resulting in a converted try.

The visitors hit straight back, but with interest with two tries, the latter being converted.

This was to be the setting for the remainder of the game as both side attempted to break through great defence, with Widnes taking a 20-12 half time lead.

A special mention is needed for the effort shown by Sean Snape in the first 30 minutes of the game, until his exit from the field led to Mayfield being reduced to an available 15 men.

The second half saw strong running from the now depleted Mayfield team with injuries mounting by the minute, but with adversity came solidarity and Mayfield coming out 32-28 winners right on the last minute.

Scorers for Mayfield were Dave Devlin, Andy Lee, James Percy, Jake Johnstone and Billy Percy with a brace, whilst Johnny Marsland slotted four goals.

Both team's coaches were extremely proud of the effort on display with good performances from Damien Corcoran, Johnny Vegas, The Percy brothers and Andy Lee, but the Man of the match awards went to Widnes No. 6, and Mayfield’s Johnny Marsland for the victors.

A couple of weeks welcomed rest now until the final game of the season and possible play-off games, and the coaching staff will be working hard to build on the recent good form to finish as strongly as possible.
