Stanley Rangers 10 - 44 Rochdale Mayfield

Date published: 20 August 2013

Mayfield Rugby League's National Conference League campaign rolled on last Saturday as they visited Stanley Rangers at Wakefield.

Mayfield were are pushing for the promotion places and the Wakefield side are at the foot of the division, but the hosts were fighting to avoid relegation and have lost the majority of their games, narrowly by the odd point.

Mayfield coaches Matt Calland and Sam Butterworth were well aware of the need to overcome any complacency, and the team put the effort in to extend the winning run to eight games with a fine 10-44 victory.

Mayfield started strongest, down a fair slope, and built up an 18 - 0 lead within the first 30 minutes.

Stanley were stunned and saw the end of their season coming, but throwing caution to the wind, managed to fight back to 18-10.

Mayfield pressed again, in an effort to get full value of their use of the slope, but their efforts were halted by an early end to the first half, which, inexplicably lasted only 35 minutes.

The half time team talk was an honest one as the Rochdale lads spelled out the need to go forward before spreading the ball, and they did this with aplomb in the next 40 minutes to finish easy winners at 10 - 44. This was despite a strange dismissal for Sam Butterworth, following a minor tackle infringement.

Best for Mayfield were try scorer Dan Kaufman and Matty Moores in the forwards. The strong running Moores was ably supported by all the pack, particularly Simon Moore, Todd O'Brien and Liam Whalley, whilst assured full back play from Kaufman gave much needed second half field position, which was capitalised on by try scorers Calland, Ben Namulatua and half back Lewis Sheridan who capped a great performance with eight goals. Joe Qanuici also benefitted greatly with four tries.

Team: Dan Kaufman. Cage Duffy, Matt Calland, Rob Kershaw, Komai Namulatu. Lewis Sheridan, Sam Butterworth. Mitch Spackman, Todd O'Brien, Simon Moore, Matty Moores, Liam Whalley, Joe Quincy. Aiden Gleeson, Alex West, Nick Hargreaves, Sean Mulcahy.
