Mayfield 10 – 48 Halton

Date published: 25 July 2013

Mayfield NWML entertained premier division Halton at the Mayfield Sports Centre with confidence riding high.

Mayfield started in fine form when, with only two minutes on the clock, the impressive Ieuan Higgs intercepted on his own ten and sprinted untouched to touch down under the sticks. He converted his own try, 6 – 0.

Callum Marriott, Sean Snape and Andy Lee were causing the visitors problems every time they got the ball.

Mayfield were unlucky not to score again as Nick Hargreaves was held up over the line. Higgs and Marriott had worked hard showing touches of class and took their side up field with Mark Nyland making good yards up the middle. Craig White took advantage of the position and, with a long cut out pass, put the flying Dave Devlin in at the corner, 10 – 0.

Mayfield were again unlucky as Andy Battersby was judged touch in goal as he tried to ground the ball.

The game was being played at quick pace in humid conditions and this took its toll on the home side.

Halton upped the intensity and Mayfield couldn’t match them as they levelled the score  10 – 10 before half time.

The second half belonged entirely to the visitors as they maintained the momentum and ran in another seven tries for a final score of 10 - 48.

There were some bright spells as Mayfield attempted to get back in the game - notably the efforts of Billy Percy, Damian Corcoran and Nick Hargreaves - but in the end they were outclassed by the better team.

There was no shame in this defeat bearing in mind Halton are a premier division side and are the best side Mayfield will face this season.

Team: Sean Snape, Dave Devlin, Nick Hargreaves, Billy Percy, George Yewdale, Ieuan Higgs, John Marsland, James Percy, Damian Corcoran, Mark Nyland, Callum Marriott, Andy Lee, Duncan Simpson, Craig White, Andy Battersby, Anthony Greaves.
