Rugby: Mayfield Mustangs results

Date published: 25 July 2013

Mayfield Under-7s travelled to Widnes West Bank on Sunday where they defended stoutly against much bigger opponents Mason Andrews Smith. Tyler Kenwright and Isaac Reid showed particular determination in their efforts.

Vinnie Wainwright scored two tries as well as making some telling tackles which earned him the MOM award.

Jamie Burke showed some great skills with the ball while Jamie Howe and Jacob Andrews Smith supported the play well.

These lads are improving every week now and really enjoyed this, their penultimate game before the summer break.

Mayfield Under-9s were back to their best on Saturday as they played local rivals, Saddleworth Rangers. Some tough defence and good attacking play set the stall for a solid all round performance.

Mentions have to go to man of the match, Harvey Wolfe, on his debut for some tough defence and a well taken try.

Top tackler went to Alfie "the fonze" Glover for 21 tackles, three of which stopped them scoring when they were over the line.

Magic moment went to Max Wood for two big dump tackles on their biggest lad and a try which saw him sidestep their whole team twice.

Mentions also go to Billy Pirouzan for some awesome line speed, Ellis Tracey and Owen Webster for taking on their biggest lads in defence and winning, Peter Reilly-Day for his best defensive performance of the season and to Ellis Mitchelle, Louis Bamford and Kyle Corcoran for taking us forward. Keep it up fellas.

Mayfield Under-12s took on Crosfields from the division above them in a Lancashire cup tie on Sunday.

Unfortunately the opposition proved too strong for this Mayfield side.

It was a great all round effort with Mayfield losing out 12 – 20. Jack Taylor was named MOM with the coach’s awards going to Oliver Lee and Thomas Birtles.

Mustangs Under-14s travelled to Leigh East on Sunday for league game.

A close first half saw Mayfield edge the lead at half time with a Sam Kershaw try, converted by Lindon Clayton.

The second half started well for Rochdale with wingman Jack Jackson going over to increase the lead.

Leigh came back into the game through some basic mistakes by Mayfield but a second try from centre Sam Kershaw saw the Rochdale team home for an 18-8 victory to continue to move them up the league.

Mayfield Under-15’s won through to the quarter finals of the Lancashire cup on Sunday at the Mayfield Sports Centre beating premier division side Widnes 20 – 4 in a tough game of rugby league with a performance that belied their years.

Widnes  cored first and must have fancied themselves for the victory, but Dean Hartley’s side had other ideas. They ran in 20 unanswered points playing the sort of rugby that makes a coach proud and proves the lads are listening at training.

Matthew Lees took the MOM award with Jack McConachie and Matthew Chrimes topping the tackle count while Joe Schofield took the coaches award.
