Hornets players runaway winners in Twenty/20 challenge

Date published: 23 July 2013

Rochdale Hornets players retained their title in the second annual Twenty/20 challenge against Hornets' supporters at Milnrow Cricket Club on Sunday (21 July).

The players were runaway winners in last year's fixture against 'The Swarm', the Hornets' supporters team but this year the supporters had been in hard training, attending net sessions over the last eight weeks, but to no avail as the players were once again runaway winners - despite the best efforts of the umpires giving very dubious decisions against the players on a number of occasions!

The players batted first and hit a formidable 210, with fours and sixes being smashed all over the ground, before losing their last wicket in the final of their 20 overs.

The supporters innings started badly with a run out that was inexplicably not given by the umpires. This run out/not out scenario was repeated twice more before the players sussed a rat and decried their bad luck with officials - just like rugby said one player!

Despite a valiant effort, and the weeks of practice, the supporters were no match for a well polished players team and so it was the players triumphed, though the real winners were those who had ventured out in the somewhat cooler weather to watch a thoroughly enjoyable game.
