New Milnrow & Newhey Rugby League Club
Date published: 02 April 2008
After a half a season break the new Milnrow/Newhey ARLFC will see the return of open age Rugby League to the villages.
With extensive behind the scenes work already in place the future is said to look bright for the new club.
Tapping into the existing goodwill and player base, the club hopes to pick up the baton of rugby league in the Milnrow and Newhey area which stretches back to the origins of the game.
The first step has been the resumption of training, which is every Wednesday 6.30pm on the Firgrove Playing Fields. All players, old and new, have been made welcome but as David Ramsbottom, who is helping with the coaching, says: "Our aim is to attract as many people as possible to be involved in the club so new players, no matter what experience, if any, will be made to feel at home." With that in mind the club have an open door policy when it comes to training and the Wednesday night Firgrove sessions are open to anyone.
The turn out so far for the training sessions has given organiser Marvin Connelly great encouragement.
An application has already been forwarded to the North West Counties League so the club are ready to join the League next season.
The club has also formed a ground breaking association with the Rochdale Swarm Tag Rugby League Team, which will see some shared coaching, the joint use of facilities and player development, a move that can both clubs believe they will benefit from.
Mr Connelly said: "Everyone involved in this new venture is excited and judging by the response to the Wednesday night training sessions the future looks bright."
