Success Plough on with Cup Final in sight!

Date published: 30 March 2008

A game played on a reasonably good surface for the time of the year, and with Success to the Plough stand in keeper Dominic McDermot playing in goal, saw Success narrowly defeat bottom of the Sunday League Premier Divsion Plough in a tough game.

Plough, with the wind at their backs, looked the more likely to score first as they went at Success from the start, and should have took the lead but bad finishing let them down on more that one occasion. Success with one eye on next week's Lancashire Cup Final were just trying to get through the game without any injuries, but after 10 minutes striker Richard Helm limped out with a pulled muscle which could force him to miss the Cup Final and with other key players still injured it is a worry for Success.

From a free kick, and against the run of play, Matt Jackson hit home a loose ball from some eight yards out to give Success an undeserved lead.

It was the during more Plough pressure that Success added a second against the run of play when a through ball which the keeper could have been expected to collect, was snapped up by the nippy Carl Dawood who tapped the ball into the ungarded net.

Half Time: Plough 0 - 2 Success to the Plough

With the wind now behind their backs it was Success looked a much better side at the start of the second half and they should have scored when Tim Astley beat two Plough players, drew the keeper out and had the open goal at his mercy only to try and blast the net from the posts and in doing so managed to put the ball over the bar from ten yards out!

Was that miss going to prove the turning point of the match? It looked like it was when 10 minutes later Plough pulled one back - Foster scored with a great first touch and strike into the corner. Then within minutes Plough added their second to level the score; a shot from a corner somehow found the net through a mass of players.

However, Success went ahead again when Dawood beat the Plough fullback on the right and pulled the ball to Jackson who passed the ball to Byron Milne who scored with style.

Before Plough could reorganise it was 4-2 as Tolson hit a thunderbolt that came off the post, but dropped invitingly at the feet of Milne who tapped the ball in.

Success pushing forward and they were in again; the ball fell to Tolson and he calmly chipped the Plough keeper as he rushed out, 5-2 to Success and it looked game over but football is a funny old game and in the closing 5 minutes Plough pulled two goals back to Success soemthing to think about in the final momnets, but five proved enough to give Success the three points.

Full Time: Plough 4 - 5 Success to the Plough
