Hopwood Hall College football academy: County champions

Date published: 26 June 2012

Hopwood Hall College Football Academy has finished the season in style by winning the Greater Manchester County Cup for U-19s Colleges.

The victory was made all the sweeter as seven of the starting eleven players are first year students; this means they are eligible to play in U-17s competitions, so winning the U-19s Cup is a fantastic achievement for this young squad of players.

The final was played at the ground of Flixton FC in Manchester where they met Loreto College, a very strong, physical team who, like Hopwood, also play an attractive style of football.

The match was literally a ‘game of two halves’ with Hopwood Hall College dominating the first half with goals from Liam Ellis and Aaron Dunks and then having to cope with a barrage of attacks from a resurgent Loreto in the second half.

Credit should go out to both teams for a terrific game of football played in the right spirit on a difficult pitch (a little bumpy after a long season) however, Hopwood Hall College were worthy of their victory and were deservedly crowned County Champions 2012.

Rob Johnson, Hopwood Hall College’s Football Academy Head Coach was extremely proud of their success and commented: “Having such a young squad hopefully bodes well for next season where the boys will be looking to retain the trophy and also make a push for league success.”
