Rochdale Football Club has raised almost £500 for Springhill Hospice.
When Rochdale took on Walsall FC in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in October ticket prices were discounted and the first £1 of the adult admission price was set aside to be donated to Springhill Hospice in Rochdale and St Giles Walsall Hospice.
The promotion raised a total of £977.60 and £488.80 has now been donated to each of the hospices.
Chief Executive of Rochdale AFC, Colin Garlick, presented a cheque to Springhill Hospice on Wednesday (14 December); he said he was “pleased” with the final amount.
Adding: “We got people in on the night and attendance was higher than expected because we dropped the prices but also because people were happy to support the charities.”
A bucket collection carried out by the hospice on the day of the match also raised £340.
Sarah Ford, Income Services Lead, for Springhill Hospice, said the amount raised was “great” and joining forces with the football club offered a “different audience” to hospice.
Dale’s partnership with Springhill, as part of the Football League’s link up with Help the Hospices, will continue this weekend when Rochdale take on Yeovil Town at Spotland.
In an event hosted by Dale’s main sponsor the Co-operative, the half-time 'Co-operative 1844 Challenge' will be transformed for one day only into the 'Co-operative Christmas Charity Challenge' with a £500 prize fund up for grabs for Springhill Hospice. The challenge will be taken by members of The All Stars football team, including Alan Halsall, best known for his role as Tyrone Dobbs in Coronation Street.
A bucket collection for the hospice will also take place.
