Cricket game in memory of scorer
Date published: 29 March 2011
Members of Milnrow Cricket Club are preparing for a cricket match in memory of their long standing scorer who passed away in 2009.
Michael Robins, 64, was the first team scorer at the club for 25 years. He originated from Hampshire and spent his childhood in Australia before moving to Rochdale in the 1980s.
He was a familiar face at the club and many of the players had known him since being teenagers. Although a shy person he was known for his impecable score books. He gave up first team scoring due to ill health but still remained involved with the club.
Now, in a tribute to him, the team are taking part in a match in his memory, travelling to Essex on 9 April to play two games against Herongate Cricket Club in Brentwood.
A former Milnrow player, Michael Potts, now plays for that team.
Oliver Hope, who has played at Milnrow for 16 years, said: “Michael’s funeral kind of came and went and we wanted to do something in his memory, it is a nice thing to do.
“Most of us have grown up with him.
“His life was cricket.
“It was very sad when he died and we want to try and do something to remember him.”
