Town team take on fire-fighters for charity

Rugby players from across the borough took on players from across the country today (Sunday 30 January 2011) in a charity game.

The Rochdale and District Amateur Rugby League Association's Town Team versus the Great Britain Fire Brigade team kicked off at the Mayfield Sports Centre in Castleton at 2.00pm.

The game is part of a bid to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity as well as getting the Fire Brigade Team back together.

Speaking to Rochdale Online before the game Sammy Samson, vice chairman of the ARL said:  “Today we want to get a win under our belts, the Fire Brigade have got some good lads playing and this is a tough encounter but we need a win under our belts.”

The town team has only been together for six months but in that time they have played the Rochdale Hornets and the Great Britain Student Team.

He said: “We have had some really successful fixtures and the town team structure is working – the amateur scene in Rochdale is doing really well.”

The teams haven’t set a target fundraising amount but any proceeds they make after breaking even will go towards the Fire Fighters Charity.

The Fire Fighters Charity is the official organisation which exists for fire fighters during their times of need and assists over 13,000 injured individuals every year by providing pioneering treatment and support services.

In May the town team will take on Royal Navy team and hope to turn the match into a forces awareness day.
