Spotland Meths win first trophy in long history

Spotland Methodists Football Club members - Mark Buffery and Chris Watson - proudly holding the Trophy
Local amateur football club, Spotland Methodists have won Division Two of the Redrow Lancashire Amateur League - not only the first time in the clubs history it has won a trophy, also their centre forward, Danny Stokes, was the top goal scorer in the League with 39 goals and the team was the top goal scoring team in all eight divisions of the League.
Spotland Meths have turned themselves into an impressive amateur team. A couple of years ago, there was very little interest and commitment to the team, save for the die hards, but now they have three teams, all doing well and the members are from a real cross section of society.
Talking of the club, Mark Buffery, first team goalkeeper, said: "The Trophy is testament to manager Andy Wightman, and the organiser and Club Secretary, Pete Johnson, who have put so much into the club over the years, and of course the players that turn out every Saturday, who all get on so well, despite contrasting lives outside the club. It's a great thing for the youngsters to get involved in as sport makes such a valuable contribution to society."
The club is keen to raise awareness in order to keep funds coming in so that the club can continue; as with all amateur sport clubs the club face the persistent struggle of funding ongoing costs. It is envisaged that fund raising activities, perhaps including a Sportsman’s Dinner, will be held in the very near future to help the Club alleviate cash flow difficulties.
People interested in joining the club, or helping raise the money needed to ensure its survival, can contact Mark Buffery on 07725 136972.
