Sunday football finally gets played again!

Date published: 30 January 2007

The Rochdale amp; District Sunday Football League finally got going again after the enforced break caused by the weather and there were some quite impressive results and a handful of shocks in all divisions.

Premier Division
Last years champions Littleborough got off to a flyer against The Gallows and romped into a two goal lead, but ill discipline allowed that lead to slip and they ended up going down 3-2.
Bamford H&H are revitalised and should have come out on top of their clash with Birches but, for all their pressing, they could only manage a 1-1 draw. They did have the ball in the net late on, which would have brought the three valuable points, but the referee ruled the ball didn’t cross the line.
Commercial thought they had gained a valuable point towards safety in their game against Cartshaft, but a late, late goal gave Cartshaft the victory 3 goals to 2.

First Division
Italia against Catholic Club was billed as the game of the day in the First Division and it didn’t disappoint. Catholic Club romped into a 5-2 lead with only 20 minutes left, but three Italia goals made it 5-5, and but for some last ditch Catholic Club defending it could have been worse for the side favourites to claim Premier status next term.
Brunswick seem to be getting their act together after a slow start to the season and they were unlucky not to claim all three points against Queen Anne. The score finishing in a 1-1l draw.
Marston Tavern are chasing a quick return to the Premier Division, but came unstuck at North Star. They did manage a 2-2 draw, but when the results are reflected upon at the end of the season, Tavern are likely to look back at this game as two missed points.
Broadway Celtic marched on at the top of the First Division with an emphatic victory at bottom club Woodhouse. Celtic recorded an easy 8-2 victory.

Second Division
A 100% record was under threat as Copperpot Reserves took on Turks Head at Firgrove and for 89 minutes that threat was very real, but Copperpot Res managed to sneak a winner in the last minute to the despair of the Turks Head players.
Wardleworth managed an excellent 2-1 victory away at DC United with a vastly improved performance.
Old Bricklayers remain bottom of the Second Division and it is only time before their relegation is confirmed - they lost again. This time to FC Bernard 2 -0.
Royal Exchange are struggling to get a team out every week, and they should be commended for continuing to do so, however, their results are not helping attract players: they lost 3-0 to mid-table Bay Horse.
The Star were easy 5-1 winners at home to Whitworth Valley.

Third Division
The shock of the day came at Norden school where Woolworths were expected to record an easy victory against Red Lion. Had Woolworths converted their chances, they would have run in 6 or 7 goals. As it was they couldn’t score and Lion scored on the break to secure their third win in succession.
Another shock was Blue Ball holding Catholic Club Res to a 1-1 draw and it could have been so much worse for Club had a cast-iron penalty been awarded to Blue Ball in the last minute.
As expected Dale Dynamos beat Old Bulls Head.
Rochdale Online produced some great football against The Waggon, but missed chances almost cost them dearly. The main culprits were Kershaw and the debutant Preston. As it is Online recorded a 4-3 win with goals from Walker (2), Journeaux and Sanderson. They did it with probably one of the best amateur goals ever scored, a 35 yard volley by the veteran Nathan Walker. The velocity of the shot pulled all the pegs out of the ground as the ball was still picking up speed when it hit the net.
