England v Norway women's U19 football at Spotland
Date published: 24 September 2009
Norway 1 - 1 England
Two of Europe's best teenage female football teams, England and Norway, were to be found showcasing their skills in the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship at Spotland Stadium tonight.
In a game that was to decide the winners of group six, the draw that ensued meant Norway top the group on goal difference. England must now wait to see if they qualify for the knock out rounds as a best runner up.
The first half was dominated by England and their possession paid off after twenty minutes when Toni Duggan opened the scoring. Flaherty and Coombs had attempts on goal for England but the score remained England one Norway nil when the half time whistle blew.
The second half began with Norway looking much the stronger team. Quick incisive football meant they kept possession well and it came as no surprise when a beautiful through ball bypassed the England defence and left Julie Adserø one on one with England goalkeeper Spencer. Still with plenty to do, Adserø buried the ball in the far corner with power and precision giving Spencer no chance.
Norway kept the pressure up and Dekkerhus and Christensen both had chances to give Norway the lead.
With seconds left on the clock England had a glorious opportunity to steal the game and win the group. Marsh floated a free kick to the far post; Duggan headed and Norway goalkeeper Petterson could only parry straight to the feet of Cunningham, but Cunningham's composure betrayed her just when she needed it most and she blazed her shot over the bar with the goal at her mercy.
