Female Giants of basketball

Date published: 16 April 2007

In September 2006 a new girls basketball team, Rochdale Giants, was set up in the borough due to there being few opportunities for girls to play on a regular basis.  The 'Giants' entered the Greater Manchester League and play teams in other boroughs who are well established club sides.  Currently the Giants are top of the league, a fantastic achievement for girls who in September had only played basketball at school.

The team credit their success to the dedication and hard work of their coach Adele Pearson and the support offered from parents. They have also recently secured sponsorship from Nufire security who have supplied a new playing kit and Paul Tensel who supplied a match ball.

Coach Adele Pearson said: "The girl’s basketball was set up to fall in line with new requirements for the Manchester Youth Games, each month a tournament is played in a different borough. Rochdale girls up to now have been very successful and are at the top of the leader board, which puts us in a very good position in the Youth Games play-offs. The team is made up of girls from years 7-8 from local school in Rochdale. Due to their success, three girls have been invited to the Amaechi Centre in Manchester to try out for National League."
