Success for Littleborough hockey star

Date published: 07 May 2007

Twenty-year-old Littleborough hockey star Rosalind Cox has been celebrating success on two fronts.  Rosalind, who plays at right back for Poynton Hockey Club, was a key member of the team that has just gained promotion to the English Hockey Premier Division for the 2007-8 season, as well as reaching the semi-final of the National Cup.

“It’s been fantastic playing for Poynton and being an integral part of the defence” enthused Ms Cox.  “It will be a real challenge next season to be in a league with all the best players in Great Britain, but it’s a challenge we are relishing.”

Highlighting her contribution, Roz was voted the team’s most improved player of the season.

For the last three weekends, in Edinburgh, Swansea and Belle Vue, Manchester, Ms Cox has been a member of the senior Welsh squad playing as Celtic Panthers in the Great Britain Super League.  Ms Cox, who has over 20 caps for Wales at U-18 and U-21 levels, did not expect to make the senior team.  She explained: “There were more experienced players than me and I was really hoping to make the team for 2008.  But I was prepared to play at left midfield for Wales, though it is not my best position, and so made the team.  We still have lots to play for at international level, with the Celtic Cup in July and the European Championships in Croatia I September, so I’ll be working hard to keep my place on the team.  Who knows, I might even end up at right back!”

Ms Cox began her hockey career playing for Rochdale in the Youth Games and has gone on to enjoy considerable success at county, regional, national and now international level.  Ms Cox is in her final year at Manchester Metropolitan University studying physiotherapy; she has captained the University team, and is a qualified coach and umpire.
