Rochdale have told ten players they can leave the club following Sunday's defeat to Gillingham in the League Two play-off semi-finals.
Scott Wiseman was the most surprising name on Keith Hill's released list after the defender was largely thought to have had a successful first season with Dale by the supporters.
Wiseman joins veteran striker Lee Thorpe as the two players who have featured regularly in the first team this season but not been offered new contracts to extend their stays at Spotland.
Goalkeepers James Spencer and Sam Russell, midfielder Mark Jones and defenders Nathan D'Laryea and Tom Newey complete the list of seven players to have been released by the club. The release of Spencer and Russell leaves Dale without a recognised goalkeeper at the club.
A further three players, who are still contracted for next season, have been placed on the transfer list. Clark Keltie featured regularly this season but did not play a part in either of the play-off games, while Lee McEvilly and Kallum Higginbotham have found first team football hard to come by and were loaned to other clubs during the season.
Three of the players that were out of contract at the end of the season remain a part of Keith Hill's plans. Record appearance holder and club captain Gary Jones, midfielder Ciaran Toner, whose goal at Aldershot was named Dale's goal of the season, and young winger Joe Thompson, who scored a hat-trick in the same game, have been offered new contracts to extend their time at the club.
