A successful end to indoor cricket

Date published: 08 April 2009

In a thrilling climax of the League, Unique, against all odds, defeated the league winners Rycc to win the inaugural Indoor Cricket League cup final.

After winning the toss, Uniques skipper Mo Manawar put Rycc into bat and, with superb fielding, which accounted for four run outs, they limited Rycc to 63 runs with only Qaiser making a significant 18 runs.

For Unique, Gufran was pick of the bowlers with 2-11.

Opening the batting for Unique was a player called Afridi, and he did his name sake, Pakistan's test playing allrounder Shahid, proud, plundering the opposition to all parts of the arena, included three massive sixes, to make a match winning 41 not out.

Unique deservedly won the cup with two overs to spare.

A delighted Mo Manawar, Unique captain, said: “It’s incredible. We were massive underdogs but my players fought as a team and I wish to thank my players for their efforts and a lot of credit goes to the Basaf committee for putting up an excellent league. We hope to come back and challenge for honours next season.”

Disappointed Rycc skipper Konain Ali said: “Congratulations to Unique. We must admit that the better team won on the day.”

In the other cup final, between the league's older sides, league champions Masters came up against Legends.

Batting first Legends scored 74 in eight overs, with a good innings from Shahid, 20 not out, and Midge, 14.

Masters lost early wickets and never recovered and, despite a hard hitting 21 not out from Aleem, they lost the final by 19 runs. Excellent bowling from Shahid, 3-4, and Ashfaq, 2-9, paved the way for a win for Legends.

The Basaf management committee would like to thank all the teams, players and public who participated in the league and the volunteers who gave up their Sundays for the league.

Special thanks to Andy and Simon from Mathew Moss Centre for their help and support during the duration of the league.

Following the success of the Indoor Cricket League, Basaf are launching a 20/20 Cricket League in June and are now inviting teams who want to participate in the midweek evening league.

Any team interested in joining the league can contact Khalid or Parwez on 07878 986719. There are limited places available.

There will also be a “Legends” league for older players.
