Leeds Met University 24 Hornets 38

Date published: 09 March 2009

Hornets denied Leeds Met a historical appearance in the fourth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup with a narrow victory.

A late Hornets charge prevented Leeds Met from becoming the first student side to reach the fourth round of the competition.

The Met opened the scoring but trailed heavily at half time thanks to tries from Ian Sinfield, Martin Gambles and Craig Johnson.

But a blistering start to the second half from the home side got them to within four points of Hornets within just a couple of minutes of the re-start.

The students even went ahead when Iain Gordon converted his own try but Hornets stepped up a gear in the final quarter to record victory.

Paul Raftery, Mark Brocklehurst and Chris Giles went over for three unanswered tries to give Hornets the win.
