Indoor cricket hits Rochdale
Date published: 23 January 2009
Rochdale based sports group British Asian Sports and Arts Foundation (BASAF) is ready for its second weekend of indoor cricket action after a successful first round of matches last Sunday.
BASAF has started an Indoor Cricket League at Matthew Moss sports hall, which will run every Sunday until 29 March, 11am-4pm.
The league is aimed at encouraging some of the older members of the local asian community to change their lifestyles and do more exercise.
There are ten teams in the league - a 'Super Six', made up of players who play cricket regularly in the summer, and four 'Legends' teams, consisting of older players looking to relive former glories!
There are 120 players already registered and BASAF are hoping even more teams will join in next year.
M. Parwez, vice chairman of BASAF, said: "The main purpose is to bridge the gap between these people and positively approach the situation so that people do not feel apprehensive about playing different sports. It shows that age should not be a barrier to your social and leisure activities. The main is to help local communities become more active."
Last weekend saw 'All-stars' face 'Badshahs' in the opening league encounter. 'All Stars' notched a blistering 161 off 10 overs. 'Badshahs' could not recover from the loss of early wickets and 'All Stars' ran out comfortable winners.
In the other games 'Lahore Greens' lost out to 'RYCC', while 'Rochdalians' brushed aside 'Punjab'.
In the 'legends' league there were two close encounters, with narrow victories for 'Masters' over 'Legends' and 'Veterans' over 'Seniors'.
Rochdale Online will be featuring in-depth weekly updates of the Indoor Cricket League. Visit the Sport section every week to find out what happened in the weekend action.
