Swarm to train with Fijian world cup stars

Date published: 09 December 2008

The Rochdale Swarm have arranged a special training session with a touring Australian based Fijian Team, which is using Rochdale as its base while in the UK.

The training session, in conjunction with the Swarm's partner club Milnrow & Newhey ARLFC, will take place at the all-weather facility at Balderstone Technology College off Oldham Road, on Thursday night (11 December) between 7 and 8pm.

The link up between the two clubs came about thanks to the excellent relationship developed earlier in the season when the Swarm played the Rochdale Fijian Association at Spotland Stadium.

Mike Ratu of the Rochdale Fijian Association, who is acting as liaison officer to the Fijian Tourists, contacted the Swarm to see how the two sides could organise a mutually beneficial event. It was decided a joint training session was the way to go.

Mark Wynn, from the Rochdale Swarm, said: "It's not often you get to train with players fresh from a Rugby League World Cup Semi Final! We at the Swarm are incredibly proud of the fact we are getting the opportunity to train with these guys and to show the respect that the Fijians are held in by Rugby League Supporters."

Anybody who wants to watch or join in this session should just get themselves down to Balderstone on Thursday night.
